After everything was divided up among the other provinces, what was left over was made into Manitoba.
Think of Manitoba as the hourglass of Canada. An hourglass lying on its side. Manitoba is the narrow part where the sand passes through. Going east one has about three choices of routes and three choices going west. But all roads converge here.
As stated three eastern roads converge here:
#1. The main road, Canada #1 or #17. This of course is where all the truck traffic is.
#2. Route 11 along the US border.
#3. The northern route, # See the section on Ontario for more explanation.
The three western roads are:
#1. The main road, Canada #1 from Winnipeg to Calgary, the main truck route.
#2. The Yellowhead Highway from Winnipeg to Edmonton, Alberta. Still a major route but one can take off roads such as the trip through Riding Mountain National Park west of Neepawa Manitoba. This is the preferred motorcycle route, in part because it leads to Jasper National Park as will be explained in the Alberta section.

#3 Highway 3 and other minor roads that are just north of the US border. This is the so called
RED COAT TRAIL. Go to that homepage.
