I read your piece about "Russia vs. BMW". Very amusing. More stuff broke on my R1100GS in one 9000 mile mostly-paved ride than has broken in 50 thousand on the Honda. I am not impressed, so far. The GS had only 15K miles on it when I got it, and they looked to be gentle miles. It is pretty stable on dirt and gravel roads, however, and, in contrast, the Honda is terrifying when the road runs out of pavement.
