BOLIVIA: A REPORT FROM A BOLIVIAN
Hola, Tynda Am sure people told you to visit Sucre, La Paz, el Lago Titicaca (Copacabana is the usual, tourist place though I always wanted to go to one of the other small villages around it just to see what they were like), Santa Cruz for contrast to Altiplano. Abel is from Oruro but the only time of year that it is worthwhile to go there is during Carnaval in the fall (Feb.). Abel also says Tarija is very nice though I don't know as haven't been. Los Yungas is supposed to be interesting however the road there is considered to be the most dangerous in the country. Have heard lots of horror stories about it. I'm sure you were also told that it is tons cheaper to do everything in Bolivia than in Argentina or Chile. Watch all of your stuff in places with lots of people, especially the market. Be careful with the police. They love to tell you have broken a law when you haven't in order for you to pass over a few Bolivianos. Since most are without vehicles, it is best to just keep moving when you see one and definitely don't make eye-contact. If you don't see them raising their hand to try to stop you they won't follow as they are without wheels. Abel also says "just talk to them in English and they will probably give up on trying to get anything out of you." When you are in La Paz try to go to a Peña. They are held at night. You buy a ticket and they do a show of virtually all the different types of Bolivian music and dance. Really nice way to be introduced to Bolivian folklore. Gotta run. Will write again if I think of anything else important. Enjoy yourself! Grace Vega
