so, am in cusco, capital of inca-land. arrived today, friday 12th. staying at the 'casa grande' on santa catalina street. very close to the policestation and just off the main square. i hope the quito old town police are not in touch with their bretheren in peru. they wouldn't recognise me anyway, as the licence plate is totally illegible. in fact the whole bike is brown. i did NOT fall off though!
the road today - chaluanca to 20km east of abencay on the nazca to cusco route- about 150km - was top stuff. lots of big puddles, mud, dirt, a couple of small land slides, river crossings {about half a meter deep - about 10 of them}. if you are worried about your machine, i would NOT recommend it. it is the rainy season and i do have a big nobbly on the back. the rest of the road {340km from nazca to chaluanca and 180km from just east of abencay to cusco} is of the finest twisty, and i mean TWISTY stuff.
gary on his r1100gs from austria is also in the same hotel and he drove from huancaveclia via sta ines to abencayo to cusco. his comment: 'would be fun in the dry.' he did get his huge tank through, so everything is do-able.

And another email about this road:
We will ever remember the road from Nasza to
Cusco. Because it took us 3 days and it was horrible to drive in the rain
season. There are 150km with deep mud, big holes, maybe 10 deep and heavy
(very wet) river crossings without bridges. There was really no street.
( Sir Richard Burton 1856 )
We like this slogan about travelling and hope you understand it or will
find somebody to translate it for you. At the end you will find a picture
from us which is taken in the Atacama desert.
