Dear friends:
let me assure you, you DON´T need a carnet for Ecuador.
I suggest using GIRAG cargo. they do Panama - Bogota - Quito.
The bikes will have to switch planes in Bogota, so make sure
you insist on fast delivery of the bikes in Quito.
It`s mandatory to write on the bill of lading, the words:
TOURIST - IN TRANSIT and a note: URGENT DELIVERY - PASSENGERS
WAITING IN QUITO.
Talk to several empoyees at the cargo company, and expalin to them
that you need the bikes in Quito FAST.
All this is to avoid delays in Bogota.
Once you get to Quito, you`ll have the bikes out in a few hours.
I suggest using an agent. The agent I use and that has helped
many bikers is BERTHA IBARRA. She`s a very well know customs agent,
you ask anybody in the customs bulding for her.
Please give a call when you are in Quito, I can go with you to
customs if I`m in town.

Hello Ricardo, well we have made it to Panama and are about to try and sort out shipping or flying the bikes to Ecuador. Thanks for the assurance that we dont need carnets to get into Ecuador but can I ask you a question regarding this. We are considering to fly our bikes to Quinto and our only source of info is Horizionsunlimited.com and they mention repeatally that you do need a carnet since 2001 or 2 or something. Is this correct and what do we need to do if we dont have a carnet to make it easier to get through customs, our spanish is poor (can only order beers and hotel rooms, but thats ok)
Your advice is appricated, and we would like to have a beer and thank you for your advice when we get to Quito.
Much thanks
Martin and Boxy (Jamie to return to the trip in Peru)
