BOLIVIA:  MOTO ROUTES

#1.  POTOSI TO UYUNI

I've just arrived in Uyuni. The road from Potosì to here is better than the

one from Ururo to Sucre. It's not very good though, it's dirt all the way, 4

watercrossings (two quite deep ones and two muddy ones), and after 40-50 km

from Potosì it's on and off with loose sand and rocks in the road. It took

me about 5 hours driving the 210 km's, but I stopped several times, and I'm

not the best driver on dirt, especially when my arms isn't totally heeled

yet after the accident. But I'd rather drive this road back and forth than

going on the Oruro-Sucre road again!

I've already left La Paz, and am currently in Sucre. If you go here, don't

take the direct road from Uroru, but go via Potosì, here's why:

More than 300 km's dirt road, much of it quite bad, with lots of rocks of

various sizes in the road, and the worst thing; loose sand in many places.

Because of the loose sand I had several "almost-accidents". In addition it

is very curvy, and has at least 30-40 stream/river crossings. Luckily only

5-6 of them was much deeper than 20-30 cm's, but I wouldn't drive this road

in the rainy season! It took me 11 hours from Oruro to Sucre......

#   NORTH FROM LA PAZ TO PERU

So there are three ways:

Desaguadero

Copacabana

total east.

I know number three only as far as the asfalt /tar is reaching in northern

direction from here. Sorry I cannot tell about the side of Peru.

But two other advices I may give you:

1. ca. 25 km north (before) Puno on right hand side (for you) is a place,

where on a halfisland are precolumbian towers for the dead (graves). Its a

nice place only a few ks from main road, You'll lose two hours to visit it

and its great.

2. If you go east of lago, you reach tar in Escoma, next pueblo is CARABUCO

visit the church!!!

the condition is terrible but the paintings are......

UYUNI TO CHILE

At this time we are not in La Paz, but in San Pedro de Atacama (Chili). We

reached this "strange", but warm and little expensive place yesterday. It

was a tough drive, coming from Uyuni over the Salar and then heading south

in Bolivia to the Lagunas (Colorado and Verde). It took us 5 day for a bit

more than 500km!!! Of course - NO asphalt!
